Centre Info

The three sites are co-ordinated by one Director. Gillian Barclay oversees the operations and strategic direction of the service. Gillian is located primarily at the Tinning Street office.

Mitchell Street

35-place centre situated in Brunswick East that caters for children from 6 months to five years of age.

It operates from a converted period house, and as soon as you walk through the door it feels like home. Maria has been Team Leader at the centre for many years - and is now enrolling the children of the children she cared for all those years ago. Luisa is her Second in Charge. Together they manage a centre that focuses on family and developing a sense of community. Rosa and Fabiola job-share the cooking, and produce a daily menu that meets the requirements of the Start Right Eat Right criteria. They believe it is important to not only provide a midday meal that is healthy and nutritious, but it must also be appealing to children, and introduce them to new tastes and smells. Children with allergies are also catered for.

Joeanne is the nursery Room Leader and she is assisted by Melanie. This room of ten children under two years old is situated at the front of the building with it's own contained yard.

Sarah is the new Room Leader of the toddlers. She is assisted by Tina, and their room is located at the rear of the building. Double french doors open out to the shared yard and ten children between the ages of two and three years occupy this room.

The central room is for the three to five year olds and incorporates a funded kindergarten program. Lucy is the trained kindergarten teacher and Amanda is the diploma educator. There are 15 children in this room. A covered verandah area is to the side of this room, enabling a free-flow indoor-outdoor program to operate. This program also has an Italian language component.

Jessica completes the regular team. She holds a certificate 3 in child care, and is currently studying for her diploma. Her role is part-time, and floats between rooms covering staff breaks.

Mitchell Street program planning days are Wednesday. One day each month both room staff have non-contact time whereby they can discuss observations, evaluate their program, and plan for the month ahead. Kirsty and Ves work each Wednesday at Mitchell Street to replace the two staff whose turn it is to plan. Consistency of staff is very important. Josie is a regular at the centre on Thursdays.

Unlike the other two centres, Mitchell Street is not a Council-owned building. It is owned by the co-operative. In 2010, the centre was successful in obtaining a grant from Moreland Council to upgrade it's outdoor play area, back and front.

Tinning Street

35-place centre situated in Brunswick that caters for children from 6 months to five years of age.

The natural outdoor space is a particular appeal of the centre. The rear yard has water tanks, veggie garden and a spectacular mural!! Major renovations have just been completed.

Veanne is the Team Leader at the centre and Kate is her Second in Charge. The book-keeper, Allison is also located at Tinning Street on a part-time basis.

Kate is the Room Leader of the nursery and she is assisted by JoJo. As with Mitchell Street, their room is located at the front of the building, and their children have access to their own yard. There are ten children in this room.

The next room, adjacent to the kitchen, is the toddler room. Sarah is the Room Leader and she is assisted by Stef. There are also ten children in this room. They have a side door that allows access to the rear yard.

At the end of the building is the three to five room which includes a funded kindergarten program. This program is delivered by trained kindergarten teacher, Diana and Erin is the diploma educator. There are fifteen children in this room.

Dorothea is the cook at Tinning Street. Her experience has been with aged care and child care so she is comfortable developing menus that meet the requirements outlined in the Start Right Eat Right program, as well as catering for a range of allergies.

Shelley and Robyn complete the regular team. Thursday is the program planning day for Tinning Street and planning staff are replaced by Kirsty and Ves also. Josie is at the centre Mondays, Tuesdays and Friday - usually covering RDO's. Yin is also a regular casual.

Dunstan Reserve

This centre is 39 places, plus 10 sessionsal kindergarten places.  However in September this year, major renovations will be undertaken to expand the centre's capacity. In 2012 it will become a 67 place centre and the 3 & 4 year old kindergarten programs will be integrated within the long day care setting.

Gaynor is the Team Leader, and her 2IC is Melissa, both previously from Tinning Street.

Unlike Tinning and Mitchell Streets, Dunstan Reserve is a purpose built centre. The building is Council-owned.

The infant room holds 12 under 2 year olds.  Michelle is the room leader and she is assisted by Elle and Jessica.  They run an indoor/outdoor program.

Nextdoor, the toddler room caters for 10 children.  Melissa and Seniz are the educators in this room.

The 3-5 room is the largest room.  Belinda is the room leader and her colleague is Fotini.  This room works collaboratively with the small sessional kindergarten in the adjacent room.

Stacey is the 4 year old kindergarten teacher and Catie is the 3 year old kindergarten teacher.

The centre has a wonderful outdoor area, with a strong focus on sustainable gardening.

The cook's position is in a stage of transition, and Ryan is currently stepping in to assist in that role.

Donaly, Kay and Sarah completed the Dunstan team. Ves and Kirsty also cover program planning on Tuesdays, and Josie is a Wednesday staff member.
